-- ALBUMS -- (Scroll down for singles/EPs and Others) TITLE: SUBMARINE ![]() FORMAT: LP / CD CAT NO: LQLP 1 / LQCD 1 COPYRIGHT: Liquid Records RELEASED: July 1992 TRACKS: Safari / Beetle / Sushi / Favorite Sister/ Astronaut Blues / Betty Clean / Buffalo / Snow / Valentine 69 / Submarine PAUL PAGE COMMENTS: After two EP's, we wanted to make an album. Cheree did not have the funds and it was mutually agreed that it was time to move on. Our manager at that time put up the necessary cash, and Submarine was the result of an intense 11 days recording that saw 10 tracks recorded and mixed, a physical fight and the band splitting up and reforming almost immediately. I vividly remember the night we completed the record, and the sense of relief. Soon after, we signed to a newly formed Irish label, Liquid Records who sat on the record for almost a year and seemed intent on slowly strangling the band. The record was released to positive reviews, but Liquid did little to promote it and our sense of frustration grew. The songs were somewhat derivative, but there is a further move away from some of our earlier influences on some of the tracks. However, not everyone saw it this way. One of my favorite reviews came from a Scottish Fanzine that said "Buy Submarine and get Sonic Youth's 'Sister' and 'EVOL' for free." Ouch. TITLE: HEARTWORM ![]() FORMAT: LP / CD / Cassette CAT NO: CD 480281 2, CK 67468 (US) COPYRIGHT: Columbia Records RELEASED: October 1995 TRACKS: Twinkle / When We Were Young / Tripped / Honeymoon Is Over / We Don't Need Nobody Else / Personality / Blinded / Fiction / Users / Morningrise MORE: Recorded at Windmill Lane Studio, Dublin - Sept-Nov 1994 PAUL PAGE COMMENTS: After the mess that surrounded the release of "Submarine", we knew we had little future with Liquid Records, and for a while we wondered whether it was worth carrying on. We retired to a tiny, dingy rehearsal room in Dublin and wrote the bulk of "Heartworm". We went back to the whole "us-against-the-world mentality" and pretty soon Warner's gave us the funds to go record a demo. "We Don't Need..." was on that demo but Warner's showed no further interest.
However, the Engineer of that session, Chris O'Brien passed the tape on to Sony's rep in Ireland and they funded the recording of further demo tapes. EMI became interested, and suddenly having being ignored for years, there were two major labels desperately trying to sign the band. In the end, instinct told us that Sony were the more enthusiastic and we went with them. We chose Warne Livesey as Producer for the same reason as our choice of label: enthusiasm. Lou Giordano, who produced some sugar material was brought in to mix.The recording and mixing took a total of 11 weeks and went pretty smoothly. We found it difficult to adjust to the slow pace of the whole process and constantly referred back to the demo's, which was a source of considerable irritation for Warne much to our surprise. Sony left us to work away without interference so we got to make the album exactly as we wanted. There was some tension in the studio, but nothing out of the ordinary and we left the studio with a record that both Sony and ourselves were totally happy with. TITLE: HEARTWORM ![]() FORMAT: LP (Blue Vinyl) CAT NO: 480281 0 COPYRIGHT: Columbia Records RELEASED: October 1995 TRACKS: Twinkle / When We Were Young / Tripped / Honeymoon Is Over / We Don't Need Nobody Else / Personality / Blinded / Fiction / Users / Morningrise / A Natural TITLE: WHIPPING BOY / THIRD ALBUM ![]() FORMAT: CD CAT NO: LOWRENT2001 COPYRIGHT: Low Rent Records RELEASED: April 2000 TRACKS: So Much For Love / Bad Books / Pat The Almighty / Mutton / Fly / That Was Then This Is Now / One To Call My Own / Puppets / Who Am I / Ghost Of Elvis / No Place To Go PAUL PAGE COMMENTS: After parting company with Sony, we were back on familiar territory but this time an element of self doubt had crept into the band. Where before we drew strength from adversity, now it just seemed like one knock too many. We decided there was an album there worth recording, and with the financial help of a long-time friend of the band, David Bell, we set about recording it. The album took five weeks to finish and was not without problems and tensions but we got there. Inevitably, people will compare it to Heartworm and I think it compares favorably. -- EP'S -- TITLE: SWEET MANGLED THING ![]() FORMAT: Cassette COPYRIGHT: Gigantic Records RELEASED: October 1988 TRACKS: Velvet Crush / Highwayman / Alligator Smile / Happy / I Think I Miss You PAUL PAGE COMMENTS: Our first trip to a recording studio. Basically a demo, but we decided to stick a simple black and white sleeve on it and call it our first record. Some of the local indie stores stocked it and it even got reviewed as an album in Ireland's only rock magazine. Coupled with a dubious poster campaign that featured quotes from a Time Magazine review espousing the greatness of Whipping Boy, this EP stirred up interest in the band locally. Needless to say the quotes in Time Magazine related to somebody else; we were nothing if not resourceful back then. TITLE: WHIPPING BOY EP ![]() FORMAT: 12" EP COPYRIGHT: CHEREE RECORDS CAT NO: CHEREE 8T RELEASED: October 1990 TRACKS: Switchblade Smile / Valentine 69 / Sugar I Swear PAUL PAGE COMMENTS: This is a thinly disguised effort to actually BECOME My Bloody Valentine/Sonic Youth. At the time, we were heavily influenced by the emerging noise scene and this was an attempt to emulate, no simulate, what was going on there. The whole "noise for noises' sake" seemed like a good idea at the time and quickly gained us a reputation in Dublin where bands either sounded like U2 or The Waterboys. We were
looked on as something of an oddity in Dublin and this pleased us no
end. At the time stirring things up mattered almost as much as the
music. This record actually garnered favourable reviews in the British inkies, which looking back is a source of some amusement to me and a confirmation of a long held opinion of mine that most British journos at that time didn't know their arse from their elbows. Cheree records were a London label with a growing reputation in the English music press at this time. They were home to The Telescopes and Bark Psychosis, purveyors of the kind of indie noise that had the music press drooling back then. Cheree heard a radio session we had done and offered us the chance to record and we jumped right in. This was a chance to leave the Dublin circuit that was choking on U2 and REM-influenced bands and play the London circuit, that was hung up on My Bloody Valentine and Sonic Youth. The lesser of two evils, so to speak. In truth this EP is a step back from our first release; chronic production, a sea of hissy noise and barely audible drums and vocals. Typically some of the indie journo's loved it. It's saving grace is the cover painting by Ken Kiff. Fansite valentine69.com reports: "Vinyl contains some messages on inner rim: "Jesus loves a whipping boy" and "A porky prime cut" on side A and "It's a long way to Mardi Gras baby", "Harmony sucks" and "A proky prime cut" on side B." TITLE: I THINK I MISS YOU EP ![]() FORMAT: 12" EP COPYRIGHT: Cheree Records CAT NO: Cheree 11T TRACKS: Daze / Highwayman / I Think I Miss You / She Makes Me Ill PAUL PAGE COMMENTS: Sonically, a big step up from the first EP, and less easy to categorise, this is still a band finding its feet. Despite containing two of our most enduring tracks in "Highwayman" and "I Think I Miss You" this record failed to capture any of the excitement present at the live shows. First recording outside Dublin. London was a pretty depressing place in the early 90's, and we never felt entirely comfortable there. At the time, we were building up a following in Dublin playing places like the Underground Bar, a semi-legendary venue that is now sadly defunct. Production was much improved on previous releases and while it received very limited airplay, reviews were positive and it sold reasonably well. Cover art caused some controversy, and features an example of an artist "suffering for his art". The psychedeldic red blobs present on the cover are actually blood stains where the designer deliberately shed some blood for that "authentic feel". Fansite valentine69.com reports: "Vinyl contains two messages on inner rim: "There aint nothin' in this space, fruit salad" on side A, and "Don't fuck with my mind, sweet Iris" on side B." -- SINGLES -- TITLE: TWINKLEFORMAT: CDS CAT NO: 661371 2 COPYRIGHT: Columbia Records RELEASED: August 1995; re-released April 1996 TRACKS: Twinkle / A Natural / Plaything / Favourite Sister PAUL PAGE COMMENTS: When this was originally released, it was a month after an appearance on the "Jools Holland Show" on the BBC. This helped this single to nudge the UK top 50. It was re-released towards the end of our time with Columbia with CD2 and CD3 to give it a helping hand, but to no avail."Plaything" should really have made the album; it was felt at the time it was good enough but that it did not quite fit in. Of the live tracks, "Favorite Sister" was the only salvageable track from a recording of a particularly drunken gig at the Project Art Centre. The other live tracks on CD1 and CD2 are all taken from a gig in the Furnace in Dublin.

RELEASED: October 1995 TRACKS: We Don't Need Nobody Else / Disappointed / Here I Am PAUL PAGE COMMENTS: "Everybody saw this as the "big" track on the album so it was inevitable that it was going to be a single. Again, it nudged the Top 50 but got no further. The b-sides were songs written pre-Heartworm. The acoustic version of Twinkle is a pretty radical re-working of that song, and one of my favorite b-sides."

TITLE: WHEN WE WERE YOUNGFORMAT: CDS CAT NO: 662806 2 COPYRIGHT: Sony Music Entertainment (UK) Ltd. RELEASED: January 1996 TRACKS: When We Were Young / As The Day Goes / When We Were Young (Philo Version) / Caroline Says MISC: Track 3 words by Phil Lynott; Track 4 by Lou Reed PAUL PAGE COMMENTS: Sony placed a lot of faith in this breaking the UK charts; midweek it had reached 34 and things were looking good but by the end of the week it had dropped to the lower 40's and it was effectively over for this single. We had always resisted doing cover versions since our early days when our set list included stuff by The Fall, Joy Division, Beach Boys and The Clash, mainly because we did such a lousy job! Our attempt at Lou Reed's tack here is a decent effort, and again it is a radically different version to Lou's. The "Philo Version" of 'When We Were Young' is the words of Thin Lizzy frontman, Phil Lynott set to the music of 'When We Were Young' and fine words they are too.One curious fact about this release is that the b-side of the cassette version features an original composition, "As The Day Goes." Sony managed to cock this up by placing a track called "As The Day Goes" by another Sony artist on our b-side. So a limited edition of this cassette features a track by a horrible Spandau Ballet-like band on our b-side. A collectors item or a very sick joke.
